Complete List of Badges

The following paragraphs are excerpted from the syllabus for COMM 3344. Interactive Multimedia (Web Design). As part of their final grade, students were asked to pursue their own customized pathway through material related to the world of web design. Possibilities include minimalist design, geolocation, domain hosting, and mastering the Photoshop Pen Tool

You can find a complete list of possible badges below the break, you can read more detailed badge descriptions (PDF), and you can view the student blog postings linked to their badge projects. When planning the class, I seriously underestimated how long it would take to write a full-blown badge description. At first, I created the descriptions in Adobe InDesign. This was not a good use of my time. It was easier to create them as web pages, and this approach made it easier to update badge descriptions from multiple machines. I wrote full-blown descriptions for the badges that seemed to have captured the most student interest, and developed more compressed blurbs for all of the other badges (PDF).

There are two types of badges: foundation badges and specialization badges. All students must earn the foundation badges in order to pass the course, and you will have easily acquired most of these badges by the time Spring Break rolls around. Much of the work we do in class will be linked to the foundation badges, as will the minisites. Specialization badges allow you to develop your own path through the course material. There are six badge categories: coding, industry analysis, graphic design, user experience design, power user skills, and entrepreneurship. Before the end of the semester, you must earn at least one badge in each of these categories in order to pass the class.
The badge grade is easy to calculate:
  • A Grade. Student masters all foundation badges and at least 8 specialization badges.
  • B Grade. Student masters all foundation badges and at least 6 specialization badges.
  • C Grade. Student masters all foundation badges and at least 5 specialization badges.
