As noted in my recent message to the class mailing list, new CSS properties completely transform our approach to multiple column layouts. This will be very useful for responsive design and for attempts to incorporate grid systems.
The only catch is that not all browsers support these new specifications. For example, IE 9 cannot handle the multiple column tags. IE 10, which will eventually become the standard browser on Windows platforms, does support the columns.
When using any of these emerging CSS properties, you need to first determine which browsers will support them. You can find the answers at a site called When Can I Use (http://caniuse.com). The site lists all of the CSS properties and explains the extent of their browser support.
